Bookkeeping For Small Businesses – Information & Advice July 22nd, 2010

Bookkeeping records are required for every small business. These records are for tax purposes and need to represent income, profit and expenses. For every business there are three ways in which they can complete these records. They can do it themselves, they can hire a bookkeeper or they can use special software. If a small business owner chooses to do their bookkeeping themselves, either with a pen and paper or using a standard computer spreadsheet (such as Excel), then they must feel confident in their ability to deal with numbers and to understand and comply with the financial regulations in their country. The good news is that for very small businesses, doing this is not rocket science, and most businessmen capable of running and managing a business have the skills required to adequately produce the bookkeeping records. When it comes to personally taking care of your own bookkeeping the main drawback is the chance of making a mistake. You may mislay certain documents or simply read one wrongly. If this happens you will likely declare false information and as such be liable for some sort of penalty or fine. There is also the fact that a business owner will likely be unaware of certain intricacies in the law that can allow them to save money over time. With the proper advice they will probably be able to save on tax.

Using bookkeeping software certainly makes bookkeeping an easier for task for businesses to do themselves. Specialist software guides users through the process and lets them know exactly what information and figures they need to input. The output, i.e. the finished reports and statements, will also be sure to in an acceptable format, with everything that needs to be there being there and being in the right place. However, bookkeeping software although designed to be as easy as possible can still be a complicated affair, particularly for somebody who has not used it before or is not well versed with computers. There is also the possibility you will make mistakes, although you are told what information needs to go where, the software is not able to determine if the information you have input is a mistake or not, which means you can suffer the same fines and penalties for mistakes as you would if you had done it manually and made mistakes. The third option, which is hiring a bookkeeper, is obviously the most convenient and the best way to avoid mistakes being made. The only downside to it is the extra cost that will be incurred, however, in the long run can actually work out to be the most cost effective method. Why? Because business owners can focus on making money rather than fiddling around with figures and there is almost no chance of any fines being incurred for not following financial regulations.

Getting More Customers – Ways To Do It July 10th, 2010

What is the fastest way to increase sales? It is by increasing the number of people who come to your store. Assuming that nothing else in your store changes, an increase in the number of shoppers through the door is fastest way to a bigger bottom line. So, how do you coax more shoppers into you store?

- Advertising is sure to increase business. If you live in a small town, a small ad in your local newspaper can make a big difference to how many people decide to come down and check out your place of business. You do not need to spend money on big ads or color inserts with numerous pages. Make sure that your ad is well designed and eye catching and that it clearly highlights some aspect of your store. Perhaps you carry seasonal items or holiday merchandise. Maybe you just need to remind people in your community of your every day merchandise. If you keep a small ad in the paper every week, you will surely see an increase in shoppers.

- Make the front of your store look as attractive as possible. Too many store owners spend so much time arranging the look of the inside of their store that they forget to give the front of it the attention that it deserves. Depending on where your store is located, you could have hundreds, or even thousands, of potential customers walking by each and every day. Whether or not they decide to enter you store or not is partly down to what you are selling and partly down to how your storefront looks. So, make sure that your window display looks perfect and consider buying an awning to cover your window, as they look professional and make you stand out from the stores around you.

- Great service has its own rewards. If you treat every customer who comes into your store respectfully and politely, no matter how much they buy or even if they buy, these customers will spread the word to their friends. Good service creates free advertising. People prefer to shop where they are treated well and each shopping experience is a good experience.

- When there is a community event be sure to become part of that event. Donate to good community causes like parades, town events, school fundraisers and events, etc. By taking the time to do this you get your own name and the name of your shop into the community. People will associate you and your business with all of the good that you have done for the community and will want to come into your shop and spend money to repay you for your generosity. This is good free advertising and sure to boost your bottom line.
